Visual Systems Lab

See how systems
really work.

Complex engineering, made visible. I’m building interactive labs to explore how systems behave, what happens when they fail, and how to reason through the repair.

A public learning project by Jason Clark.
Built to deepen understanding through experimentation.

01 / The first domain

Starting with MongoDB.

Database engineering Overview available

MongoDB

From a single document to a distributed database. The first lab will explore the decisions behind queries, reliability, and day-to-day production operations.

Explore the learning path and workspace preview. Interactive lessons are still being built.

What’s planned

  • Data & queries

    Documents, indexes, and query execution.

  • Resilience & scale

    Replication, failover, and sharding.

  • Production judgment

    Monitoring, recovery, and troubleshooting.

02 / The learning approach

Build an intuition. Test it.

The labs will connect a visual model to real engineering decisions.

  1. See the system.

Trace how the pieces fit together and follow a request from start to finish.

  2. Change a variable.

Make a prediction, adjust a condition, and examine the consequences in a safe simulation.

  3. Explain the outcome.

Work through failures, inspect real commands and configuration, and check your understanding.

Beyond the first lab

Many systems. One way to explore.

Future topics may include Linux, Kubernetes, databases, networking, cloud infrastructure, distributed systems, and AI. MongoDB comes first; additional domains are for later.
